HIV WORKSHOP - ROME 2026

History

The HIV International Workshops started when a European research grant on HIV Nef joined Andreas Baur (Friedrich-Alexander-Universität Erlangen-Nürnberg, Germany), Kalle Saksela (University of Helsinki, Finland), Maurizio Federico (Istituto Superiore di Sanità, Italy) and Olivier Schwartz (Institut Pasteur, France). While a first meeting which took place in 2002 was mainly confined to these research groups, HIV International Workshop II in Praiano 2003 Hotel Tritone attracted researchers from across the globe. Thanks to the passionate efforts of Paola d’Aloja (Istituto Superiore di Sanità (Italy), this workshop was a success and became a tradition: a third was organized on October 7-10 2004 Venice Palazzo Zenobio, fourth September 29th to October 2nd 2005 Palermo, fifth September 28th to October 1st 2006 Trieste Hotel Miramare & Maximilian’s and sixth October 26th-29th 2007 Capri Hotel La Palma.
After this journey across Italy, a seventh was organized by Bruno Verhasselt (Ghent University, Belgium), December 11th – 13th 2008 Hotel Artemide Rome, followed by a series in the Academia Belgica, at first every year (VIII Rome October 15th – 17th 2009, IX October 22nd -23rd 2010, X October 7th – 8th 2011, XI September 21st -22nd 2012). Later, the meeting was organized every 2 years in the same venue (XII September 26th – 27th 2014, XIII September 23rd – 24th 2016, XIV September 21st – 22nd 2018, and delayed by COVID-19 pandemic XV September 22nd -23rd 2022). These meetings hosted on the average about 50 researchers.
A fresh start was taken by the HIV Workshop XVI September 18th – 20th 2024, organized in a team effort by Alessia Zamborlini (University Paris Saclay, France); Francesca Di Nunzio (Institut Pasteur, France) Nicoletta Casartelli (Institut Pasteur, France), Bruno Verhasselt Ghent University, Belgium) and Felipe Diaz-Griffero (Einstein, USA).
