HIV WORKSHOP - ROME 2026

History

Overview

It is our great pleasure to invite you to the XVII HIV-1 Workshop, which will be held at the Academia Belgica in Rome, Italy, from September 16 to 18, 2026.

The HIV-1 Workshops began in 2001 and has been held every two years in different locations around the world, continuing an uninterrupted 25-year tradition of fostering scientific exchange and collaboration. In recent years, the meeting has found a welcoming and inspiring home in Rome, thanks to the generous support of the Academia Belgica.

Originally conceived as a dedicated Nef meeting, an ambitious attempt to unravel the seemingly thousand functions attributed to this fascinating viral protein; the workshop quickly revealed that understanding Nef alone would require at least three full days and possibly its own sabbatical. Over time, as the field expanded and diversified, the meeting evolved naturally into a broader conference focused on the molecular biology of HIV-1.

Despite this evolution, the founding spirit of the workshop has remained unchanged. The meeting was designed to be a friendly, open space that encourages discussion, sparks new collaborations, and allows all participants to learn from one another while enjoying outstanding science in an engaging environment.

A defining feature of the HIV-1 Workshop is its inclusive structure: trainees, early-career scientists, and established investigators all have the opportunity to present their work. This format enriches the entire community by promoting scientific dialogue across career stages and by highlighting diverse perspectives that drive the field forward.

Beyond the scientific program, the meeting offers an additional and incomparable benefit: you step outside the conference venue and you are in Rome. Few cities in the world offer such a concentration of history, culture, and beauty. Whether wandering past ancient ruins, discovering hidden Renaissance gems, or simply enjoying the rhythm of Roman life, participants will find that Rome provides endless opportunities for exploration and inspiration.

We look forward to welcoming you to Rome for three days of rigorous science, stimulating discussions, and collegial exchange in one of the world’s most inspiring cities.
